Fic - a bunch of drabbles

I have for you a bunch of 100 word drabbles. They're all from the potterverse 100 prompts. Three are from Hermione's POV, three from Viktor's, and all range in rating from PG to R, none contain warnable material.

Amazing Bouncing Ferret Universe.

General Cut:
*

Cuts to the specific stories:

Title: Raiding the Stash
Author: Sare Liz
Pairing/Claim: VK/HG
Rating: G
Prompt: #13, Gifts
Series: The Amazing Bouncing Ferret
Warning: None
Notes: This takes place two weeks before the Yule Ball, GoF. Hermione’s POV.

She had two weeks until Christmas and the Yule Ball, and there needed to be some sort of gift in his future. It was obvious. She needed to knit him something, but what? Socks – socks would be perfect, and she had some good sock wool in her stash, but she had no idea how big his feet were. This would take some subtle investigating. It would probably require two or three times the wool needed to make a house elf a pair of socks (not that a pair was strictly required, according to Dobby). Maybe red – for Durmstrang, for Bulgaria.

Title: A November Sidebar
Author: Sare Liz
Pairing/Claim: VK/HG
Rating: PG
Prompt: #14, Mentors
Series: The Amazing Bouncing Ferret
Warning: None
Notes: 100 word drabble. This takes place in November, before Ron figures out who Hermione is going to the Ball with. Hermione’s POV.

“But he’s… a Durmstrang. I mean, look at his Headmaster.”

“Karkaroff’s no Dumbledore, in more ways than one. I mean, yes, he’s Viktor’s Headmaster, and the curriculum is set in a certain way that favors a more rigorous understanding of the Dark Arts, but it’s not like Karkaroff is his mentor, or anything. It’s not like how it is with Dumbledore and a certain fourth year I won’t mention.”

“I don’t doubt you, Hermione, and if you say it’s alright, I’ll believe you. I just… I want to make sure it’s okay. That he’s okay.”

“It really is okay, Harry.”

Title: Day One, Fifth Year: Double Potions
Author: Sare Liz
Pairing/Claim: VK/HG
Rating: PG
Prompt: #15, Potions
Series: The Amazing Bouncing Ferret
Warning: None
Notes: 100 word drabble. This takes place on the first day of Potions, OofP, Hermione’s POV.

Ron’s sharp nudge brought her out of her daydream of strong arms and a sweet Eastern accent. It was a happy place, where she had been; a place of fearless flying, long drawn-out kisses, crisp mountain air and the bright sun of summer. Though she thought highly of this class, the Hogwarts dungeon had nothing on the mountains south of Vratsa.

Her professor skulked by, staring at her as he lectured, trying to find fault, but all she could do was stare at his long, hooked nose thinking that it looked wrong somehow, as it hadn’t been broken several times.

Title: Crystal Stalin
Author: Sare Liz
Pairing/Claim: VK/HG
Rating: PG
Prompt: #37, Chores
Series: The Amazing Bouncing Ferret
Warning: None
Notes: 100 word drabble. This takes place before the first task, GoF. Viktor’s POV.

The figurine shattered, and Viktor swore. Bending down and swiping it up in his hands, he wordlessly repaired it and equally as wordlessly berated himself for daydreaming about a brown-haired British girl instead of paying attention to the cleaning of Karkaroff’s stateroom, part of his weekly round of duties. She was terribly intriguing, though. Pretty, wildly intelligent, passionate, and a wonderful partner for conversation, he wondered if she thought of him at all, wondered if she noticed how often he looked at her, trying to get her attention. Maybe he needed to try a –

Damn.

He’d broken the figurine again.

Title: To Sleep, Perchance To Dream
Author: Sare Liz
Pairing/Claim: VK/HG
Rating: R
Prompt: #38, Sleep
Series: The Amazing Bouncing Ferret
Warning: None
Notes: 100 word drabble. This takes place in January, GoF. Viktor’s POV.

He woke with a jerk sighing to feel the slick wetness, proof of just how satisfying his dream had been. A half-asleep Evanesco made him clean enough.

He relaxed back onto his pillow, grinning to think of the images so recently playing in his mind. Her shirt had been unbuttoned and her school skirt hiked up around her hips. Oddly, they were underneath the Quidditch pitch in Vratsa and she’d been whispering the loveliest things into his ear, nibbling as she went. Toward the end she’d been chanting his name, as those who loved him said it: Vitya, Vitya, Vitya.

Title: Hands Safely In Pockets
Author: Sare Liz
Pairing/Claim: VK/HG
Rating: PG-13
Prompt: #39, Hands
Series: The Amazing Bouncing Ferret
Warning: None
Notes: 100 word drabble. This takes place early December, GoF. Viktor’s POV.

He walked across the grounds, covertly watching some couples walk to the town together. When they weren’t being yelled at for it, some of them would have a hand in the back pocket of the jeans of their partner, essentially grabbing their arse.

Could he do that?

No, Karkaroff would kill him. And if Karkaroff didn’t, and his mother heard of it, she would kill him. And if neither of them killed him, there was always the possibility that Hermione herself might hex his hand off, or something he’d miss even more.

Viktor wondered how one tactfully made that request.

I particularly liked that last one..."Viktor wondered how one tactfully made that request." And which one would hex him...

But it also occurs to me that we're still waiting on Part 2 of Letters...unless I missed something?

::grins:: No, no you haven't missed anything. I'm going to go curl up in bed and take my beta's suggestions, forthwith.

At least, that's my plan, atm. It's already past my bedtime, and ykno how it goes. Tomorrow's a workday.

I'm glad you liked them, though. I read them to a friend and her favorite was "Crystal Stalin". She was amused that he broke the thing twice.

Oh my goodness, such sweet words. Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I just nipped up to reread it and make sure we were talking about the same thing. There is a sort of normal lovelyness about them, isn't there? I love that.

Thanks for reviewing!

Enjoyed them all immensely, but especially enjoyed Crystal Stalin and the socks for some reason. There's just something about socks equaling love in the Potterverse. Discussing one's socks, packing one's socks or purchasing socks or knitting socks for someone else is like the safe, subtle way of saying "I love you" or something.

I'm a firm believer in that being the reason why Dumbledore is so blinking obsessed with good socks. The wizard just wants some love, darnit.

And I love how Snape's nose suddenly looks "wrong" to Hermione.

I'm so glad that you liked them! I'm suffering from some major senioritis over here, and all I want to do is knit, so it seemed oh-so-natural to be thinking about Hermione and the immense amount of time she spent in fourth year knitting for the freedom of house elves.

I completely agree about what you say concerning socks. I've been reading Stephanie Pearl-McPhee (Yarn Harlot), and she's got a very influential vision of sock knitting, and how giving knitted socks is a measure of your love for someone, because they'll only last a few years before they have to be tossed, as opposed to a sweater which may last a lifetime, or a blanket which may last several lifetimes.

Dumbledore strikes me as the sort of person who has his priorities in the right place, and who may indeed understand the correlation between the provision of a basic physical comfort (such as warm toes) and an expression of love and caring. I agree, he just needs some love.

Of course, there's the alternative Biblical interpretation... You know what feet were the euphemism for, in the Hebrew Scriptures, right???

Anyway, Snape. ::grins:: Ah, Snape. This was a slight and subtle nod to my previous ship, where I at least once (and others plenty of times) pointed out the fact that Severus looked like an older (meaner) version of Viktor.

I've heard the "feet" thing before. Puts a whole new, less innocent spin on having to teach Ruth/Boaz. I really have to watch it these days when kids say "Uncovered his FEEEET? Huh?"

There is just no nice way to say, "Well, it probably means she not-so-subtly came on to him by uncovering his wedding tackle and waiting for instructions, but you did NOT hear that from me..."

Re: drabbles are cute!

I'm so glad that you liked them. I really enjoy writing drabbles because it's sort of an exciting challenge to try to get something across with such limits imposed. Also, they are wonderful outlets for little spurts of creative energy. It's sort of freeing to think that not everything I write has to be a magnum opus, at least length-wise.

LOL Crystal Stalin! I love that one for Karkaroff to have a figurine of the Russian dictator - that is so believable! I don't know which I liked the best, I think the one with the hand in back pockets, that was interesting how Viktor thought of his mother, that she would think its wrong to do so and would kill him, once again gentlemany Viktor on the outside, inside normal sligthly horny teenage boy! Can't wait to read more!

[info]sare_liz

March 19 2006, 14:35:56 UTC 6 years ago

At first when I thought of Viktor knocking something over and breaking it, I had the sort of random idea of a crystal and very delicate ballerina, and throughout the story that is what was in my head. And then I thought about it and wondered what sort of crack I was on. Delicate, yes. Crystal, yes. Ballerina? No. Stalin? Better.

::grins:: That's my ABF!Viktor: pefect gentleman on the outside, randy and hormonal teen on the inside. At least in Firebolt Ring he struggles with his hormones a bit more. In ABF... less so.

Still, I'm glad you liked it!

Very nice! I loved the last three ones particularly. Crystal Stalin is amusing, Perchance to Dream tender and lovely and the last one plain adorable.

Ficcy Love

I'm a classic lurker, I voraciously devour fics by you and others and sometimes the goodness just builds and builds until a fic or set of drabbles just sends the reader in me insane with appreciation that I don't usually have the words to review with and these today were it! God I loved them but especially To Sleep Perchance to Dream and Hands Safely in Pockets. Because they show that you can have raging hormones and brains and sensitivity. And a fear of your Mother!

Re: Ficcy Love

::grins:: I'm so glad that you decided to review. Thank you.

::huggles the not-so-lurking Lurker who is ALSO named Sarah - the divine and wonderful name::

I'm terribly glad that you enjoyed my little drabbles. I have to admit that if I had to choose a favorite it might be To Sleep, Perchance To Dream, possibly because so much is described in so few words.

Again, thank you.

Re: Ficcy Love

You're absolutely welcome! Yes our name is ever so divine... Have been rewatching GoF extended version's extras and swooning over Stan/Viktor. *dreamy sigh* The boy in rl wears this huge gypsy style earring in his left (I think) ear. *wants to nibble*

*chortling like mad* Sare, you made us wait on updates for what felt like forever and day and then when you do update you just blast us out of the water. I loved these drabbles. They were so cute, and you got so much emotion across in so few words. I think I giggled as I read all of them. Were you in a humorous mood when you wrote them?

[info]sare_liz

April 22 2006, 13:27:44 UTC 6 years ago

::huge grin::

I somehow missed this comment the first time around, so I'm so glad I was idly meandering through my journal... I found love! ::huggles mslessa::

The updates have been few and far between. I feel bad about that, because really, I'd like to be writing more than I am, more than I have time for at present, and what's more, I'd like to be finishing things. That would be lovely, too.

I'm glad you liked the drabbles. I wrote them in the order they were posted, one after another, and though Viktor's came with the most blood, sweat, and tears, those were my favorite. I love drabbles for just that reason that you mentioned - the challenge of getting an entire story across in 100 words - they're the hiaku of short story, and as an artform, I love them. They help to get the creative juices flowing.

Was I in a humorous mood when I wrote them? More like determined. I was sitting at the kitchen table after dinner and chit-chatting with Frannie, whinging about not writing anything. And Viktor (my laptop) was sitting at the other end of the table. And so I whipped him out, chose six prompts, and started randomly brainstorming with Fran. It was fun, but sort of a planned, determined fun. I wrote them while she did dishes, which sort of amazed her - Fran's not a writer, and finds all of my imaginary friends/muses quite fascinating - read them out in the appropriate accent for aural betaing, cleaned them up and posted them accordingly.

I'm thinking of doing a similar thing this morning, if I can ever get out of bed.

"Viktor wondered how one tactfully made that request."
LOL! I loved all of these. They're so damn ADORABLE.

April 23 2006, 15:34:38 UTC 6 years ago

::huge grins::

Thanks!

I love that my Viktor is, in essence, a good boy. If it weren't for Quidditch, he would be one of those completely ignorable and yet entirely adorable good boys who love their parents, dream about the ones they find attractive, try to do well at what their presented, struggle with their emotions, wonder why we're here, and hope for the future. He's not evil, he's not conniving (any more than the average 18 year old), he's no more self-centered than your average teen and because of Quidditch and fame and an income, he's got a good head on his shoulders...
